A partnership scores a game when they reach 100 points below the line. In rubber bridge, at this time, all below-the-line scores are moved above the line and a new game begins. When one side scores two games, they win the rubber and get a bonus of 500 or 700 points, depending on whether the other side is vulnerable. Points are accumulated below the line, so a game can be won by a few hands.

In duplicate bridge, all points are added together, so a game is only won at a board if a contract worth more than or equal to 100 points is made. Once a game is made, a 300 or 500 points game bonus is added, instead of a 50 points part score bonus, so the reward is large. Therefore, bidding systems are developed to find makeable games and avoid getting too high.

A game is called to be missed if the hand can be bid to the game level and made using appropriate methods, but failed to do so at the table.

The typical requirements for duplicate //NT games are 25 points and fit (if applicable) between the partnership, or about 29 points for / games. With appropriate distribution, the requirement is slightly lower.

Bids below game are called part scores.

Game bids have different value, depending on whether one is playing rubber bridge or duplicate bridge, and whether he/she is vulnerable or not.
