Strong jump shift is a treatment where jump responding in a new suit is stronger than a simple 1/1 or 2/1 response.
There are a number of treatments for strong jump shifts. Some require as few as 13 points and a 6-card suit, while others require 16-17 or as many as 19 as a minimum bid. In all cases, strong jump shifts show a stronger hand than a simple 1/1 or 2/1 response.
Standard treatment[]
The standard strong jump shift is made when a hand fulfils all criteria below:
- The hand is strong, more than 16 points.
- The hand is single-suited, requiring at least 6 of the suit.
- The suit is good, typically at least two out of three honours.
As this bid takes away much bidding shape, it should be a picture bid which describe the hand near completely.
